What is Exercise Physiology?

Exercise Physiologists, or EPs for short, are university trained and qualified healthcare professionals. EP’s are governed by strict accreditation requirements, ensuring our practices are supported by the most up to date research and scientific literature.

EP’s often work in places like hospitals, healthcare clinics, gyms, and a variety of different locations, including virtually!

EP’s prescribe evidence-based exercise intervention to treat a wide range of different conditions, prescribing exercises to help manage your problem, similar to how a doctor might prescribe medication.

EPs specialise in the design, delivery, and evaluation of safe and effective exercise interventions for people with acute, sub-acute or chronic medical conditions, injuries or disabilities.

Who can see an Exercise Physiologist?

Some of the types of conditions EP’s often treat include:

-       Osteoarthritis/Osteoporosis

-       Diabetes (Type 1 and Type 2)

-       Cardiopulmonary disease

-       Neurological conditions (such as stroke or spinal cord injuries)

-       Obesity

-       Musculoskeletal conditions

-       Post operative surgery (total hip, knee, shoulder replacement)

-       Chronic pain/fatigue

-       Mental health conditions, and many more!

You don’t have to have a health condition to benefit from speaking with an EP! EPs can help anyone looking to use exercise to better improve their health and wellbeing. EP’s also specialise in goals setting and motivation change which is often where people have the most trouble when sticking to an exercise plan.

How do I see an Exercise Physiologist?

You can search for an EP near you using your search engine of choice or heading to the ESSA (Exercise Sports Science Australia) webpage and clicking “Find an AEP” (Accredited Exercise Physiologist).

You can also ask your doctor/general practitioner about writing a referral to see an EP.

Exercise Physiology services are covered under Medicare, as well as many other compensable schemes such as Private Health Insurance, DVA and more.
